THE FOUNDATION OF THE OBSTETRICAL SOCIETY

An Obstetrical Society Foundation has been created to garner and husband special funds to be used for unique educational projects.

ACADEMIC ROBES OF THE SOCIETY

Donated by Dr. Louis Gerstley, the robes are available for use by any member participating in an academic procession as the Society’s representative. They are handsome and feature the colors of the city of Philadelphia. Application for use may be made to Mrs. Wiseley, our Executive Secretary.

PRESIDENTS’ DAY

An innovation introduced by a former Society president in active practice in Upper Darby, the late Joseph J. Price, in 1967. A quiz was introduced to liven the proceedings in 1977 by Thomas Sedlacek with a prize awarded. Special awards are made to the sponsoring OB-GYN department. The competitive event of the day is the Residents’ Bowl wherein a Jeopardy-like contest is run. It is a unique Philadelphia event.

OB SOCIETY NEWSLETTER

The newsletter was for several years a very informal typewritten green sheet. Since 1982 it has been published 9 times a year. We currently offer it on this website.

PRESIDENTIAL NIGHT

Annually we have a special night for the officers and members of council and the president reflects on his/her special interests in OB-GYN, and inspires the members to continue the great traditions of the society.

THE S. LEON ISRAEL AWARD

An annual financial prize for the best paper submitted by an area OB-GYN resident, named in honor of the distinguished former chief at Pennsylvania Hospital, S. Leon Israel. The winner is given 15 minutes to present his/her paper just prior to the President’s Address in May.

THE OBSTETRICAL SOCIETY MEDAL

Created by Dr. Dorothy Barbo when she was president, the medal is given to our International Night speaker and to that physician selected by the Society to receive the J. Robert Willson Award for special meritorious service to the Society.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

The second Thursday in May is devoted to an address by our President. The winner of the S. Leon Israel paper gives his/her work in a short format just before the President speaks.
